Avoid the congested traffic of the Bangkok streets in Thailand, by whooshing along on the Bangkok Mass Transit System, more commonly known as the BTS or Skytrain. It is a 48.7-kilometer (30.3 miles) rapid transit system built above the busy streets, with 43 stations and 52 four-car trains. Its formal name is the “Elevated Train in Commemoration of His Majesty the King’s 6th Cycle Birthday.” The early plans were modeled after the Skytrain project in Vancouver, Canada. Canceled and replanned a number of times for a variety of reasons, the BTS finally opened in 1997.
Passenger traffic was a little slow in the early days, but a record-setting 760,000 people took the BTS on a single day in December 2013. New extensions will be completed by 2021 to accommodate the ever-growing capacity requirements.
There’s no better way to get around Bangkok to see all of the attractions the city has to offer.
