About Catedral de Sevilla & Giralda

The Cathedral de Sevilla is the world's largest cathedral and the third-largest church in the world. Everything here is of monumental proportion! The building that stood here was not always a Christian church, however, Abu Yaqui Yusuf originally commissioned a mosque on the site. When Seville was conquered by Ferdinand III in 1248, the mosque was converted to a cathedral.

Inside the cathedral is the tomb of Christopher Columbus as well as the remains of Ferdinand III. This unique culture and holy house merged two architectural traditions and blended Arab and Renaissance construction. The Bell Tower, or Giralda, incorporates the mosque's original minaret. Over the minaret, the Bell Tower rises about 100 meters, which made it the tallest building in the world in its time. Emblematic of Seville, the Giralda tower has no stairs. Rather, the tower was built with ramps wide enough for the Sultan to ascend on horseback to enjoy the view. As a visitor, you can also enjoy the bird's eye view of Seville, however, you will have to ascend by foot, not horseback.
