About Casa de Pilatos

Steeped in history,  Casa de Pilatos is an absolutely gorgeous ancient gracious house that exemplifies how buildings here in Andalucía have collected influences from different periods in its history. Staggeringly beautiful palace, both architecture, and gardens are outstanding.  It is considered a little Alcazar of the rich. Built-in Mudejar-Gothic and Neoclassical and Romantic styles, Casa de Pilatos dates to the 16th century.  Work started on this gorgeous building in the 1450s and its walls are covered in wonderful tiles in lots of different designs and colors and beautifully carved and painted wooden ceilings, all in the Spanish Mudejar style.  Its styles are very varied - with Gothic, Moorish and Renaissance elements that fuse into a magnificent whole. Centered around an open courtyard with pools of water with beautiful mosaics and gardens.

One of the main highlights is the decorative and colorful tile work - found everywhere on the main floor. It has a courtyard surrounded by arches, exquisite carvings, colorful tiles, and beautiful Loggia. As you walk through the arches of the patio, you will see 24 busts of Roman emperors and Greek Gods. In addition, the palace has many marble columns and floors, long corridors, ceiling paintings, large wooden doors, mudéjar tiles (Azulejos), chapels, and a beautiful and colorful palace garden in Italian style. Presently, this palace is still partly inhabited and is the residence of the 18th Duchess of Medinacelli and her family. Visit Casa de Pilatos and see how the aristocrats used to live.

Must See

  • The tile collection is amazing and the arches of the patio have wonderful engravings
  • Admire the beauty of the courtyard, gardens and exquisite tiles and stucco plasterwork
  •  Painting of a woman with a beard
  • The courtyard has a decorative water fountain and the surrounding walls are of Moorish design
  • Incredible tile work and carved wood
  • The rooms inside are all covered with antique morisco style with flowers and animals
  • The Chapel of Flagellation considered the oldest of the palace. It is definitely a very strange chapel because the tiles and mosaics give you the impression of being in a mosque and not in a Christian temple
  • A peculiar Roman sculpture in the altar. This statue is probably a pagan representation of a Roman God
  • The Small Garden with  beautiful loggias

  • The general entrance ticket is for the ground floor and you have to pay an extra  2 Euros for the upper floor (accessible only with a guide at fixed hours
  •  Only 100 people are admitted per hour so once in, the atmosphere is very peaceful
  •  The sidewalks are only wide enough to accommodate one person (so single-file), as the cars and bicycles fly past you
