About Monte Urgull

Monte Urgull is an urban hilltop situated just above Old Town. Monte Urgull is a good place to visit during a day of sightseeing and leisure in San Sebastian. It offers a leafy escape from the crowded beaches and busy pintxos bars. Walk up one of the pathways and admire the bird’s-eye view of the bay and the sea. There are quite a few attractions that you might want to explore, like the museum Casa de la Historia, Sagrado Corazón (Sacred Heart), a statue of Christ that has been watching over the city since 1950, and the old English Cemetery. You can enjoy amazing views of the rocky shoreline and the seafront promenade. Monte Urgull is a beautiful natural space ideal for hiking and picnics.

How to reach

It is 1.8 km from the city center. Taking a car is a good option as it is only a 10-minute drive.

Tips

  • The walk up to the top of the hill takes about 30 minutes. It is not a hard ascent, however, wear walking shoes for better comfort.
  • Stay for sunset — the views over the beach and the city is breathtaking. 
  • Hiking is not allowed during the night time and the entry closes around 7:30 p.m.
  • There are stalls where you can get food and refreshments.
  • Take your camera as the hill offers amazing photo opportunities.
  • Mornings are usually less crowded, so start early if you want to avoid the rush.
