Namdaemun market is not as big as sprawling Dongdaemun Market but is one of the best places to shop anytime in Seoul. It remains packed throughout the day and remains open in the night. The market is named after nearby Namdaemun Gate, officially Sungnyemun Gate. The gate was designated by the first National Treasure of Korea. It was destroyed by an arsonist in 2008. The gate was restored in 2014. The market is located between City Hall and Seoul Station in the shadows of Shinsegae Department Store near Hoehyeon Station on Seoul Subway Line 4. The charm of this market is such that even if you shop every day for a month, you will see something new that you may have missed the day before.
Namdaemun Market is located in the central area of Seoul (Namchang-dong, Jung-gu) and can be reached directly by subway. Take Line 4 to Heoyeon Station and get out at either Gate 4, 5 or 6. The fare is 1,350 KRW for 10 Km of travel.
