Hongdae is best known in South Korea for its excellent aroma of fine-arts. It is situated right in front of Hongik University, in the Mapo district of Seoul. Young artists — straight out of university — set up ateliers around the area in the early ’90s, when property prices were low. It made the Hongdae a creative hub inviting more students to the area. Following this, clubs and bars began to sprout around the ateliers, and soon this area became a haven for the city’s youth culture. Two decades later, most of the ateliers have been converted to commercial activities but earlier years of creativity has left its mark.
