Legend has it that the prophet Muhammad laid the first stones of the Quba Mosque on the outskirts of Medina in the 7th century. Also known as the First Masjid of Islam, it is the first mosque ever built. It is said that upon its completion Muhammad prayed there for two weeks and would go there every Saturday afterwards.
The mosque is a striking one. It features six white basalt domes and two tall white columns. It will definitely catch your eye against any kind of sky, but particularly when the sun shines on it. On the inside, the mosque has four minarets, a house for imams and muezzins, a library, and even a marketplace with shops. The prayer hall is built around the courtyard. Off the courtyard is a separate area reserved for women surrounded by a privacy screen. The overall look and feel of the mosque are quite simple, but the courtyard is decorated with black, red, and white marble. The open areas are sheltered from the sun by palm trees.
One of the imams said that the mosque is filled with people who love to purify themselves and Allah loves them because of it.
