Cemeteries aren’t for everyone. If you enjoy a good quiet wander, then be sure to visit Jannat al-Baqī, or “Tree Garden”. It is the first and oldest Islamic cemetery in Medina.
The site was chosen by the prophet Muhammad when one of his friends died during the construction of the Prophet’s Mosque [link to other attractions]. Muhammad’s daughter was the second to be buried here.
Al-Baqi is one of the two holiest cemeteries in Islamic because it is the resting place of Muhammad’s family and friends. Worship at graves was considered idolatry, and so the cemetery was plundered and destroyed many times. Unlike other cemeteries where one saint is revered, Al-Baqi is where Muslims go to honor all of Muhammad’s followers.
The relatively flat landscape of the cemetery, marked only by simple graves is surrounded by modern buildings. If Baqi means “where the roots of a tree are embedded”, then this is where the roots of Medina are.
