The Mosque of Al-Ghamama is located in Medina, close to the Prophet’s Mosque [link to other attraction]. It is one of the oldest mosques, built where the prophet Muhammad performed an Eid salah prayer in the last years of his life. It is also known as the Masjid Eid. Because it is so close to the Prophet’s Mosque an internal sound system was added so it could reopen for prayers.
It is said that while Muhammad prayed there a rain cloud covered the sun, and so it was named Ghamama. Muhammad also delivered the funeral prayer for the Emperor Najashi here. Although the emperor was born a Christian, he had welcomed Muslims to Ethiopia and later became Muslim himself. It was the only time the prophet gave a funeral prayer without the body.
The Mosque of Al-Ghamama is a rectangular mosque with five arched doorways at its entrance and six domes over the prayer room. The highest dome is at over the mihrab. In traditional Islamic fashion, it has a simple, unadorned interior perfect for contemplation and prayer.
It is 15.5 kms away from Medina city centre. However, from the airport you can easily take a shuttle, any public transport which is usually arranged by the tour guides, but the best is traveling by taxi or a local bus which is provided by Saudi Arabia Public Transportation Company.
