About San Juan Cemetery (Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery)

Sitting just outside the northern walls of the old city, the neoclassical church in the cemetery provides a central point among the graves. The colony’s eldest citizens are buried here, as well as the great Puerto Rican freedom fighter Pedro Albizu Campos. This Harvard-educated chemical engineer, lawyer, and politician began the agricultural workers’ strikes in 1934 and was at the lead of the movement for Puerto Rican independence until his detention and imprisonment in 1936. Muggings have happened here, so be careful if venturing in.
