San Juan’s other major fort is Fuerte San Cristóbal, an example of the largest military bases the Spanish built in the Americas. In its prime, San Cristóbal comprised twenty-seven acres with a network of six interconnected forts guarding a central core with 150 ft walls, channels, booby-trapped bridges, and tunnels. The fort has a charming museum, a store, army archives, a copy of military barracks, and remarkable Atlantic and city views. The fort was built to protect Old San Juan against land attacks from the east via Puerta de Tierra. The creative design came from the famous Irish mercenary Alejandro O’Reilly. Seven acres were cut off the fort in 1897 to facilitate jam in the old town and the following year the Spanish marked Puerto Rico’s entry into the Spanish-American War by shooting at the battleship USS Yale from its cannon battery. The fort became a National Historic Site in 1949 and part of the Unesco World Heritage Site in 1983.
The site is 2.8 km away from the city center.
