San Juan owns one of the largest and most famous art museums in the Caribbean. Housed in a beautiful neoclassical structure that was once the city’s Municipal Hospital, this museum contains 18 exhibition halls spread over an area of 130,000 sq feet. The exquisite collection comprises paintings, carvings, posters, and sculptures from the past years, chronicling such notable Puerto Rican artists as José Campeche, Francisco Oller, Nick Quijano, and Rafael Ferrer. Attaching contrast to variety, the museum also claims a hands-on exhibition space for children, a 2.5-acre art park, a preservation laboratory, a theatre, and a good shop. Artistic workshops are regularly offered for kids too.
Don't miss the gardens, where twisting paths encourage visitors to stroll past 16 sculptures and more than a thousand flowers in a scene nostalgic of Monet’s water lilies.
The museum is 5.1 k away from the city center.
