This impressive building, dating from 1533, is the traditional executive mansion in constant use in the western hemisphere. The initial fortress for the young colony, La Fortaleza ultimately abandoned its military preeminence to the city’s newer and larger forts and was renovated and extended to domicile island governors for more than three centuries. You can take a thirty-minute guided tour that includes the mansion’s Moorish gardens, the dungeon, and the chapel. Tour timings change regularly; you can call on the day you want to reserve a place or stop by the Tour Guides Office near the west end of Calle Fortaleza. Be ready for a security gauntlet, including handing over your ID for the duration of the tour.
The Fortress is just 2.1 km away from the city center.
