About Tiritiri Matangi

The Tiritiri Matangi Island is a true pleasure to the senses with acres of natural beauty, absolutely loaded with various species of plants and trees. Considered completely 'predator-free' thanks to the government's efforts, it is truly a paradise for thousands of species of flora and fauna. The lush beautiful vegetation in the island's forest host numerous rare birds within their branches. Lucky tourists can hear the kakariki or stitchbird sing through the air of the island. Within the forest stands one of New Zealand's oldest pohutukawa trees, estimated to be close to a thousand years old! Hobbs Beach gives a picturesque view of the ocean around, ideal for a swim or a quick picnic on its beautiful sands or simply basking in the sun's warm rays. Home to the native famed blue penguins, their nesting grounds are located on this beautiful island as well.
