One of the highest volcanic peaks in Auckland, One Tree Hill stands over 180 feet high. The hilltop provides a breathtaking view of the entire city of Auckland. The grave of John Logan Campbell can be found at the hilltop, fondly referred to as 'The Father of Auckland.’ John had gifted the land around the hill, currently being used as Cornwall Park, for public use in 1901. It takes its name from the solitary tree which was once at its summit. Tourists can either take a slightly challenging walk up the hill or with permission, they can get access to take their vehicle by the boom gate. The tranquillity and peace at the top of such a high peak in the middle of the city are definitely worth the effort of climbing.
One can reach One Tree Hill by bus or train from Auckland Central to within 500 meters of Cornwall Park (where One Tree Hill is located) in about 40 to 50 minutes. The train to Greenlane Station is considered the fastest route. It is 8.4 km from the city centre.
