Gifted the name 'Hui Te Ananui A Tangaroa' which means the 'Home of Tangaroa, an undersea haven; his home beneath the sea', the Maritime Museum truly lives up to its name. Located on Hobson Wharf adjacent to the Viaduct Harbor, it is the largest museum in New Zealand. The museum has a splendid collection of stories, narrations, and depictions of epic journeys and facts that contributed to shaping the history of New Zealand. The place has an enormous display of products related to navigation, and Maori vessels, European voyages, coastal traders, modern commercial shipping, marine arts and crafts, about harbour, ports and sailors. A themed art gallery gives a vivid description of the first Polynesian settlers.
The Britomart Transport Center is just walking distance from the museum, for bus and train. Ferry service from Auckland to Maritime Museum. It is 1.3 km from the city centre.
