About Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai

Mahatma Jyotiba Phule market or formerly known as Crawford Market is one of the busiest places in South Bombay. Named after one of the most active social reformers of India, the market retains the old world charm of Mumbai in many ways. They say that to get the real flavor of a city, visit its bustling markets. Here you will find a huge variety from vegetables and fresh produce to completely bizarre novelty items, Candles, party decorations, and a wide variety of miscellaneous items. The building that houses it is also one of the oldest British buildings in the city and hence worth seeing in itself. Besides, it is also located right next to Chattrapati Shivaji terminus making it an interesting place to take a look at on your trip to Mumbai and makes it convenient to travel as well. There are a few restaurants around but I personally loved Manchester United Cafe, A. Ramanayak Udipi Shri Krishna Boarding is also a must-try.

Tips

  • The morning also has the big advantage that it will be cooler as inside the market itself there is no air-conditioning and ventilation only by ceiling fans making it hot in the middle of the day.
  • You cannot bargain for everything, but you can definitely try.
  • Try to visit early morning as the first sale of the day is quite cheap.
  • The market is open every day starting very early, deliveries of fresh produce arrive by lorry at around 9 a.m. and some stalls don’t open until later at around 10:30 a.m.
  • Most local people shopping for their daily food will arrive early but even in the afternoon, the place is still busy.
  • Avoid visiting at midday when it is hottest.
  • It doesn’t close until late in the evening at around 8 p.m.
  • The exception is on Sunday when the market is only open during the morning.
