About Matthias Church

Matthias Church is an art-nouveau and a highly decorated church in Budapest. This historic church witnessed many turbulent events of Buda. The miraculous sculpture of Virgin Mary that was hidden away is said to have suddenly appeared before the invading Muslim Turks, whose morale collapsed and they left the city without a blood bath. Officially known as "the church of our lady', locally it is called "Matyas Templom" and popularly it is referred to as Matthias Church, named after the beloved and legendary King Mathias Cornivus The Fair. who established the church in 1015.  Architecturally it was transformed into various forms before it was finally brought to present glory by the master architect Frigyes Schulz;  His deviation from the traditional gothic style can be seen in the striking diamond pattern roof tiles & gargoyle-laden spires.  The fabulous beauty of the delicate turrets and the impressive roof covered in a combination of warm light hexagonal handmade porcelain tiles speak of the wonderful craftsmanship and mastery of color and design.   The Hungarian wall art inside the church is truly spectacular. Golden hewed frescoes, masterpieces of great artists Lotz & Zichy, reach out the ceiling from the floor. The antique wooden pews, stunning stain glass windows, the seven frescos of Stephen on the walls and the twelve windows showing Hungarian saints, will simply leave you spellbound. The church embodies beauty and history in equal measures. This historic church has traditionally always been the place of coronation ceremonies, royal weddings, baptisms, and other significant events and to this day it continues to be a lively and culturally significant church. Matthias church is also a great venue that provides classical concerts. The crypt includes the Museum of Ecclesiastical Art, exhibiting many religious articles and chalices. This stunning church is surrounded by an equally stunning attraction worth visiting and experiencing.
