About Buda Castle & Castle Hill

The scenic Castle Hill covers almost a kilometer across the top of a ridge beside the Danube offering great views of the river and the city. Within its forted walls and cobblestone streets lies much-relished travel attractions including Buda Castle, the National Gallery, Matthias Church, Sandor Palace, Buda Tower, and Fisherman's Bastion together with a range of monuments, statues, interesting buildings, and churches. This 14th century Buda Castle has witnessed some tumultuous moments in history from being part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to being captured by the Turks and then ruled by the Huns. Buda Castle provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time, through the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. The  Hungarian National Gallery has some fabulous collections of Hungarian Romanticist paintings and also the stunning artwork of Hungarian artists from the Middle Ages to today. Check out the National Library. It holds a copy of every single book published in Hungary!!  If you are exhausted then simply witness the interesting change of guards outside Sandor Palace or wander in the cobblestone streets. The Danube flowing below adds to the beauty. One more marvel of the castle is the Faust wine cellar tour which is truly unforgettable. There is something for everyone on Castle Hill which is rightly on UNESCO world heritage list.
