Nothing better captures Hungary’s rich history and cultural values than the emblematic Heroes’ Square. A war memorial located at the end of the famous Andr'assy Avenue and next to popular City Park. The glorious history of the monument began in 1896 when the foundation of construction was laid to commemorate the thousandth anniversary of the conquered Carpathian Basin by the Hungarians. The Millennial Monument in the middle of the square was erected to commemorate the 1000-year-old history of the Magyars. The main highlight is the Archangel Gabriel standing on top of the impressive center pillar, holding the holy crown and the double cross of christianity. To complement the pillar, the seven chieftains who led the Magyar tribes to Hungary can be seen on the stand below. Impressive Statues of kings and other key personalities stand on top of the colonnades on either side of the center pillar. Stroll along the iconic Andrassy Avenue to reach it, and gaze up at the towering statues of prominent rulers from the past 1000 years. This square celebrates the heroes of Hungary's past. 7 mounted tribesmen dominate the center of the square, one for each of the original Magyar tribes. Heroes from after that time surround the central pillar in a semi-circle and in chronological order starting with St Stephen bearing the Apostolic double-cross. This majestic square is flanked by two prominent buildings, the Museum of Fine Arts on the left and Kunsthalle (Hall of Art) on the right. It is a place which boasts many landmarks and attractions nearby like Szechenyi thermal baths, an ice skating rink, a museum, a zoo, lots of restaurants, and city gardens which serve as a good meeting point.
