The flower business in France is more than 100 years old. So is Marché aux Fleurs in Nice near the Old Port. It is one of France’s foremost markets, selling delicious fruit and vegetables, local flowers as well as local food delicacies. This market also serves as a floriculture guide to locals and visitors. People come to this market to take, ask advice on how to grow plants.
Today's market still keeps its old name from when it first began in 1897. The market abides by its tradition. Farmers from surrounding areas would arrive very early in the morning to sell their produce to the wholesalers. Thereafter flowers are sent off to the far corners of Europe by train. It is a vital part of the local economy. A legend has it that the Russian Tsar, Nicholas II was so floored with this flower market that he decided to create one in Saint Petersburg, with flowers bought in from Nice and imported it by train. How really nice!
