About Cathédrale Orthodoxe Russe Saint-Nicolas

The St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral, Nice is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral and recognized as a national monument of France. Currently, it belongs to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate. It is the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Western Europe. 

This cathedral, a  World Heritage Site is the largest edifice of this type outside Russia. The Cathedral has been built on the Muscovite style. it has a very richly decorated interior with many icons, murals, carved woodwork, and iconostasis of embossed metal which is remarkable for its architectural details. As the site is a place of worship, certain rules have to be followed and entrance to the cathedral can be refused if these rules are not respected.

  • It is a World Heritage Site
  •  It is made in the Old Russian style. Its Muscovite style architecture  with the very richly decorated interior is its main attraction
  •  Besides icons, murals, carved woodwork, and iconostasis of embossed metal  and frescos brought here by Russian emigrants which are worth seeing
  •  However certain modern elements give this Cathedral its own identity
  •  The disposition of the Greek cross plan with five domes representing Jesus and the four evangelists
  • The church also contains a rich iconostasis made in Russia  by the Khlebnikoff workshops
  •  It is a collection of ornate onion-shaped domes look astonishing

How to reach

You can choose various options of travelling by bus, tram or train to get to the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas

By Bus:

 Bus No 07, 23, 27, 64, 75

 By Train: 

CP. From the Central rail station, you can board bus No 71

Guided tour of the cathedral and chapel in French, English, Japanese, every day. It lasts around 35 minutes

Tips

  • You must follow some rules while visiting this Orthodox Cathédrale
  • Men are not given entry if they are bare-chested
  •  Mini skirts and shorts are not allowed for women
  •  Shoulders should be covered
  • You must follow the rules of this place of worship
