Ateneum is a heaven for art lovers that houses a collection of paintings from different eras and styles. Close to 4,000 paintings and 700 sculptures are displayed in the museum, which includes several drawings and sketches. The art museum in Helsinki is one part of the 3 museums that form the National Finnish Gallery. The museum houses the biggest collection of classical art in all of Helsinki and is located in the middle of the city. The building which once housed the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts was later converted to a museum in the year 1991. The art displays in the museum range from the 18th Century portraits all the way to the 20th Century art movements. The museum also houses some priceless artworks like Vincent van Gogh's Street in Auvers-sur-Oise (1890), The Luxembourg Garden (1887) by Albert Edelfelt and Hugo Simberg’s Wounded Angel (1903). Ateneum was designed by Theodor Hoijer and the structure was completed in the year 1887. Decorated ornately with a lot of statues, the building is beautifully breath-taking and a wonderful testament to the wonderful art that it holds within itself.
