Helsinki Central station is a landmark that hosts 400,000 commuters per day, as it is the main station for commuter and long-distance trains. Built in the year 1862 by Swedish architect by Carl Albert Edelfelt, the station serves as the main terminus to various trains. However, with the railway's network growing in the later part of the 19th Century, the station building turned out to be small given the occupancy of commuters. Hence, it was redesigned by Eliel Saarinen in 1909, while the building was inaugurated in 1919. The station has a special presidential waiting lounge for use of the President of Finland or his guests. The station has been carved out in Finnish Granite, while the main attractions include a clock tower, two pairs of status holding lamps lit during the night clad at the main entrance.
