Being one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Lighthouse of Alexandria was built on the island of Pharos during 300 - 280 BCE, and stood tall and proud for almost 1600 years. With a height of over 100 meters, the structure was so impressive that it was considered a man-made wonder. The lighthouse was the tallest structure in the world built by human hands until the Eiffel Tower was erected in 1889. The construction of the lighthouse was aimed to help sailors ensure their safe return to the Great Harbor. There is a lot of legend and history associated with the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The structure was eventually destroyed by three massive earthquakes. At present, there is a beautiful fort 'Citadel of Qaitbay,' where the lighthouse once stood and you can enjoy the breathtaking views surrounding it. If you are a history buff, do read the legends about the lighthouse before you visit. The area is surrounded by many restaurants and you can enjoy some authentic local food. There are also a few shops that sell handmade goods. The lighthouse provides an amazing view of the sea and the coastline and is a perfect backdrop for photos.
It is 14 km from the city center. The best way to reach the lighthouse is by taxi. It will cost you around EG£ 40.
The fastest route is via International Coastal Rd/Route 40M. Follow Wadi El-Kamar and Al Max to Max Al Shalehat Next to Al Fanar. Turn right onto Max Al Shalehat Next to Al Fanar and you will reach the lighthouse.
