The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa is a historical archaeological site and one of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval Ages. It consists of several Alexandrian tombs and burial chambers. Built around the 2nd Century A.D. the site is well preserved today because of its late discovery. There is a circular staircase at the entrance that takes you down to a room with both Roman and Egyptian art. The Hall of Caracalla, located in the first level contains human bones as well as horse bones. This used to be a mass burial chamber for those killed in 215 A.D. by Emperor Caracalla. The third and the lowest level of the Catacombs is under water today and yet to be explored. The Catacombs is 100 feet deep and reaches the ground into solid rock. In 1900, the Catacombs were accidentally discovered when a donkey slipped and fell in through an access shaft. The Catacombs are evidence of many different cultures, religions, and art that thrived on Egyptian soil.
