Big and beautiful, the historic Alexandria Opera House was constructed in 1918 during the time of King Fuad 1. Initially called the Muhammad Ali theatre, it has seen many great artists perform since the early 1900s. The Alexandria Opera House did not withstand the ravages of time and lost its charm. The neglected building, however, made it to Egypt's Heritage list. Extensive restoration work began in the year 2000 and Opera House was reopened with its past glory. Visiting companies, locals and foreign performances take place often. When you visit, make sure to wear formal clothes. It is advisable to buy tickets online to avoid any last minute inconveniences. There are weekly cultural fests and Arab and international events that take place at the theatre. There is a Talents Development Center at the Opera where teachers train students and set up performances. The Opera House is a venue for world-class events today, and a must visit if you are in Alexandria.
