Bogota city is rich in history, art, and culture. You can have a taste of all three of them in the National Museum of Colombia standing tall in the heart of Bogota downtown. This biggest and the oldest museum in entire Colombia is quite a significant structure to capture your attention in terms of its architectural finesse. Originally a fortress built out of stone and brick, the museum offers a spectacular vision of arches, domes, and columns shaped into a Greek cross of sorts and supports 104 prison cells distributed evenly and has solid wall facade. The structure was built way back in the year of 1823. It was originally used as a prison which was known as Panopticon. Today, the museum holds a total collection of 20,000 pieces of art and objects representing Colombian artifacts dating 10,000 years B.C, 20th Century indigenous and afro-Colombian art and culture. The museum houses famous paintings by Bebora Arango, Fernando Botero, Enrique Grau and few other stalwarts of art.
