About Parque Nacional da Tijuca

One of the largest urban forest areas in the world where you can enjoy watching the monkeys, sloths, and birds. The Park is essentially a rain forest. It is beautiful, and a trip through it is worthwhile. There is a nice drive around the Park, and some picturesque places to stop for pictures, and family picnics. Fantastic for walks, road cycling, and mountain biking. Also lots of places for picnicking. The visitor center has lots of interesting information (with many in English) and is full of both locals and tourists but is not overcrowded. You can spend as much or as little time here as you like depending on how far and how long you like to walk. Very peaceful and tranquil getaway with a chance to spot the odd Toucan and butterfly. A great area of natural beauty & waterfalls to walk into & relax. Away from the madding crowds of the beaches, city, and noise, you will find peace & a feeling of serenity here . A welcome change from the other tourist hot spots.

Must See

  • Amazon can be felt and enjoyed right at one of Rio's jewels, an authentic tropical forest, nicely preserved in a mountain setting, with ponds, waterfalls, and small animals like monkeys and birds.
  • Tijuca National Park is a great reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the city, and if it is a hot humid day, the cool weather in the park is a real treat.

How to reach

It is 13.2 km away from the city center.

You can reach there only by Car which is available every 15 minutes from the city center.

Taxi fare: 5.20 $ for 1 mile.

Tips

  • Keep your eyes open especially during the night/ evening and try to get a glimpse of the rare ocelots ( like a miniature leopard, size of a cougar at most); see pythons or various apes. They are there, keeping their eyes on you.
  • Do not visit during rain or rainy season, the flash floods are lethal, yet exciting to see!
  •  If it looks like it might rain during the day, don’t come to the park as the trails could be dangerous.
  • Make sure you leave before dark - there’s no lighting after sunset.
  • Wear proper shoes rather than flip-flops.
  • Enjoy taking photos inside the park.
  • DO NOT BRING MONEY OR ANY VALUABLES ( Phones) as you may get robbed.
