Christ the redeemer or Christo Redentor is the statue located at the top of the mount Corcovado, Tijuca national park, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This statue is made up of reinforced concrete and soap tiles. It was designed by a French artist named Da Silva Costa, After surveying Corcovado and consulting with Brazilian artist Carlos Oswald, come up with a new design of arms-wide-open Christ. It is the tallest art deco statue in the world and is 98 feet tall (not including the 26-foot pedestal), and the arms stretch to 92 feet wide. This statue weighs approximately 635 tonnes. The entire construction took nine years from 1922 to 1931. To make the visitor’s journey easy, in 2003 the brazil government installed escalators and elevators. In 2006, to celebrate the monument’s 75th anniversary a small chapel was built at the base. In 2007, this statue was declared as the one among the seven new wonders of the world.
