About Paraty

Located in Brazil’s Costa Verde, Paraty is a small town surrounded by mountains between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Its Portuguese colonial architecture and the abundance of natural wonders make it a hot tourist spot.The town, literally off the map until recently, is now being discovered by national and international travellers. It is recognised as a UNESCO Heritage Site since 1966. It is one of the most well-preserved colonial towns. Must See

•    An important part of the town’s charm and heritage is the Historical Centre of Paraty. The building is designed using Portuguese architecture and preserves the colonial designs of the houses
•    If accompanied by family or little ones, the Barra do Corumbe beach is a perfect place to hang out. The water is clean, calm and shallow. There are restaurants around which offers natural swimming pools and great seafood
•    Up for some adventure? Hire a kayak and row over and get up close to the Jabaquara Mangroves. You can continue further to reach the sea bay ‘Saquinho do Corumbe’ with crystal-clear waters
•    If you have half a day to spare, take a 4-hour boat ride which covers some of the natural wonders, beaches and coves
•    Hidden from other tourist spots is ‘Saco do Mamangua’ which is one of Paraty’s remarkable natural wonder. Like a fjord, it runs between stunning green peaks with a corridor of sea
•    Visit the local distilleries to sample some locally-made cachaça. Get interesting information about the place from the local guides and take home some souvenirs
•    Praia Grande is the most happening local fish market. Get to buy some fresh catches of the day. A short boat ride from here is the island of Ilha do Araújo where you can explore some secluded beaches and dense forests
•    At the heart of the Atlantic jungle, are various waterfalls which offer amazing views and swimming opportunities. You have the option of taking a jeep tour, hiking or cycling to these waterfalls

•    The Historic Centre of Paraty is the most convenient place to stay. Be sure to book in advance as most of the hotels get filled fast during the peak season. If you are looking for something more economical, there are many options within walking distance of the Historical Centre
•    Transport is easily available from all major places like Rio de Janeiro, Ilha Grande, and Sao Paulo. There are frequent buses to and from Paraty
•    There are a few free historical walking tours around the town. These tours start at 5:00 p.m. every afternoon from the town square
•    Plan your visit in the month of August to experience the annual Sugarcane Rum Festival. Paraty becomes the mecca of cachaça during these times
•    Some operators provide boat tours to several secluded beaches from the Paraty’s Historic Centres. Be sure to enquire about them
•    If planning for some adventure activities, it is better to choose operators who provide all the equipment at the place. This is sure to reduce your luggage
•    You can find great outdoor gyms in Paraty where you can enjoy your morning or evening workouts along with some stunning views
•    The best place for some shopping in Paraty is the colonial centre. You can find some amazing stuff from Brazilian dresses to locally-made coffee
