About Escadaria Selaron

This place is filled with the beautiful & vivid mosaic steps created by Chilean born artist, Jorge Selarón who has dedicated this as "my tribute to the Brazilian people." 215 steps in total, the stairs are the work of one man who wanted to make his surroundings more beautiful. He used ceramic tiles from all over the World. The result is truly amazing with the Interesting tiles and designs all along the steps. A highlight is a kiosk manned by two beautiful ladies serving juices, caipirinha in the middle of the staircase. Caipirinha is so refreshing in the heat and the right brew to support one to go up the stairs. The walls and the floors are also equally impressive and the buildings reflect Brazilian life and atmosphere. The Artist's efforts bore fruit as he collected tiles and was also sent tiles from all over the world and this he incorporated into an alleyway staircase. History of government efforts to destroy and refusal to support maintenance is also very interesting. Touted by some as the largest mosaic artwork done by a single artist, this is an amazing stair. From the bottom looking up you see this vividly colored masterpiece. But form the top looking down, it just looks like gray stone stairs.

Tips

  • It gets packed with people so get there as early as possible.
  • Do not go late in the afternoon. The area is not desirable and you will come across a lot of homeless people. Stick to the main streets only.
  • As you go towards the top, look down... the stairs look old and normal... look up and they are an eclectic masterpiece.
  • Arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds and so you can get a picture on the steps. Also, the area at the top of the stairs looks a bit sketchy.
  • There are much fewer people at the top so you can take your selfies there.
  • Take a cab and keep it. Have your Cab/ tour guide drop you at the top and come down looking at the work of art and have him pick you from the bottom of the stairs.
