About Botanical Garden (Jardim Botanico)

This is a huge park within the city of Rio de Janeiro that is connected to the Tijuca Forest, one of the last remaining pieces of the “Mata Atlântica” (South American Atlantic Forest) that existed before the arrival of European colonizers. Over 200 years ago, the Emperor of Portugal, Dom João VI, had the foresight to reserve a large piece of this forest as a nature preserve, for him and his future generations. With the delightful creation of the Jardim Botânico, it has been expanded to include species of plants, not only native to Brazil, but also from all over Latin America. The garden provides a lovely calm oasis away from the main city. The area is very well maintained and is laid out with different areas to explore (cactus garden, Japanese Gardens, Orchid house ...) dotted with waterfalls, fountains, and greenhouses. Today, this area has about 6,500 species, some of which are threatened with extinction, besides sheltering historical, artistic and archaeological monuments and a library specialized in botany with a collection of more than 32,000 volumes. Here you can see a variety of plants, trees, and flowers, besides one can appreciate some birds, butterflies and small mammals that eventually pass through the Garden.

Must See

  • So much nature right in the middle of this GIANT city. It is an amazing lung space.
  • You can truly escape it all and retreat to this natural space.
  • Don't miss the orchid house, simply amazing to see all those varieties of orchids and blooms!

How to reach

It is 11.9 km away from the Rio city center.

You can reach there by taxi.

If you enjoy moving around the city by subway (MetroRio), you can take the train to Botafogo station, followed by a Metro na Superfície Gavea bus ride and getting off at Estacao Jardim Botanico stop.

Tips

  • Try going late in the morning, it’s a lot quieter (trafficwise too).
  •  Do visit the nice little French cafe on site - they serve really good food.
  • Don't forget to bring your insect repellant. Mosquitos and ants are around. It's a tropical area after all. Enjoy!
  • Go in the morning and have breakfast at the cafe they have inside! After breakfast a walk around the botanical garden!
  • If you can avoid going there on the weekends and choose the weekdays because you will be distant from crowds and a lot of tourists...
  • A French restaurant just outside the exit is excellent. Sit outside and enjoy some really good food after the experience.
