About Holy Spirit Cathedral

The Holy Spirit Cathedral is dedicated to the Holy Spirit and is the central cathedral of the Belarusian Orthodox Church. It is one of the most instantly recognizable symbols of Minsk with its magnificent twin towers standing proudly at the heart of the city. The cathedral dates back to 1633 when the Bernardine monastery was built. But the building was damaged in a massive fire during 1741 and was reconstructed to its full glory.

  • The church is hung with multiple richly painted icons, the multi-tiered iconostasis is covered in gold and quite splendid. 
  • The painting of the Virgin Mary that has three arms is interesting.
  • Fresco paintings inside.

How to reach

Take the metro to Nemiga.

You can take bus line 425, 540, ML-73.

  • Masses are held in English and regional languages.
  • You can also take part in the regular divine services.
  • It is better to do a guided tour as you will get lots of information about the history and architecture of the church.
  • You're expected to wear decent clothes while visiting the church.
  • Cafes around the church are cheap and worth try.
  • Beautiful fresco paintings inside the church are awesome.
  • This is an inactive church with only a few people visiting at a time.
