The Careenage is located in the heart of Barbados' capital city Bridgetown under the Chamberlain Bridge, where ships were careened onto a side to be repaired, scrubbed and painted. It is become popular since the time of British settlers landed in Barbados. There's a different kind of activity that goes on in the Careenage such as eating at Waterfront Café, people shopping and the bustling noise associated with moving traffic. Fishing boats and yachts also dock here frequently. It is a pleasant marina with sailing boats for hire and day trip cruises. Two bridges span the Careenage, one that swung open when larger ships passed and another that houses the Independence Arch
Despite of its many renovations it still looks attractively old fashion. The westernmost end of the Careenage houses the Pierhead and Willoughby's Fort. Despite the surrounding hustle and bustle of Bridgetown, there's a peace and quiet that pervades the atmosphere when on this particular boardwalk at the Careenage. A nice place to stroll around for the day.
Wonderful view of yacht and boat, boardwalk, sunset and Chamberlain Bridge.
There are also shops, restaurants, boutiques, and bars.
Pretty harbor, where one can book a boat trip and can swim with turtles.
Two bus terminals are nearby -Princess Alice Bus Terminal and Fairchild Street Bus Terminal.
One can take a taxi as well for a hustle free ride.
