The Stavronikita, a 365 foot World War II Greek freighter, is the most popular wreck built in Denmark in 1956. It was destroyed by fire on August 26, 1976, and towed to Barbados. On November 21, 1978, the U.S. Navy decided to sink it some 400 yards away from the shore on the north-western side of Barbados. At present, the wreck is a sight of attraction with corals and sponges grown all over it where a whole marine life has started living and breeding. The shipwreck is located about 500 feet off the coast and has a depth of 120 feet. It can also be viewed at night through the facilitation of night dives. In this diving, a spot can experience a brilliant deep wreck dive and explore coral and marine life. Stavronikita is one of the largest reef sites in the entire Caribbean. A once in a lifetime experience to see the sunken ship covered in marine life that forms an artificial reef.
Leaving from Carlisle bay it is a 30min journey approx by boat.
