Decide for yourself whether the two dogs and two monkey sculptures at either end of the Japanese Covered Bridge in Hoi An are there because those are the years the Japanese Emperors were born, or if it’s to show the bridge was started in the year of the dog and finished in the year of the monkey. Either way, the Japanese Covered Bridge is one of Vietnam’s best-known attractions. It dates back to the 18th century, created by the Japanese to get to the Chinese quarter. On one end are the names of all of those who contributed to the bridge’s restoration. It is only about 60 feet long and very solidly built. The area is prone to earthquakes, so the bridge needed to be strong to withstand the shuddering of the earth. What it lacks in elaborate design, the bridge makes up for with its colorful façade, painted in red and wooden pagoda roof.
This wooden narrow old bridge in Hoi An, a historical landmark in the old town is a definite feast for the eyes. The bridge is a testament to the close ties between the locals and their Japanese neighbors. Get to the bridge along with tour guides or go during sunrise when crowds are scarce and grab a cycle and explore the intricacies of the bridge, which include dog and monkey statues and various inscriptions in Japanese. This is one of the most frequented sites by tourists visiting Hoi An even a small amount of time spent there is enough to get a whiff of the essence of the location. Intriguing and magnificent, the bridge is worth the visit. The Japanese Covered Bridge, or Cau Nhat Ban to the locals, is a must-see. You can even pray to the God of weather in a temple on the north side of the bridge to keep those earthquakes at bay.
