Come face to face with the rich sculptures of Mount Rushmore National Memorial. They are an enduring testament to the subjects and the artists who created them.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture completed in 1941 under the direction of Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln, but also features a museum with interactive exhibits. Why these four presidents? The sculptor selected them as representing the most important times in United States history.
The granite faces are roughly 60 ft high, depicting United States Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. George Washington was selected for declaring independence from Great Britain, the “founder” of the United States. Thomas Jefferson was selected as the primary author of the Constitution, the “builder”. Theodore Roosevelt was sculpted because he was seen as joining the east and west with the building of the Panama Canal, and for ensuring the rights of the regular working man, the “developer”. Since Abraham Lincoln saw the country through the Civil War, he was sculpted as the “preserver”.
In the summer months naturalization services are held outside. What a spectacular backdrop for becoming an American!
