There’s no “Yosemite Sam” here. Yosemite National Park is named for the Native tribe Yohhe'meti (Southern Miwok) or Yos e'meti (Central Miwok) that lived in the valley. The park is famous for its giant, ancient sequoia trees and its waterfalls. It is a vast wilderness in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains.
The waterfalls are calling your name: Yosemite Falls, a waterfall that drops 2,425 ft, Bridalveil Falls, Vernal Fall, Nevada Fall, and Illilouette Falls. Climb the granite cliffs of Half Dome, the legendary granite dome. For a bigger challenge scale the near-vertical cliffs of El Capitan. Stop at the scenic Tunnel View between the two. You can always put on your warm coat and mitts and visit Glacier Point to get a bird’s-eye view over it all.
The meadows of Yosemite were made even more famous by photographer Ansel Adams, who has a wilderness area within the park named after him. Be sure to stay at The Majestic Yosemite Hotel, the park’s signature AAA Four-Diamond Hotel, almost blends into the natural background, with an outer façade of stone and wood. Plan accordingly, because the park has a “Leave No Trace” program to preserve its beauty for future generations to enjoy.
