About Grand Canyon National Park

The majesty of the Grand Canyon National Park in northwestern Arizona will take your breath away. Whether you drive or take one of the many bus tours to get there, be prepared to spend some time walking along with either of the rims.

The South Rim and Desert View are open to visitors all year. The Visitor Center offers a museum and film “A Journey of Wonder”. Follow the Rim Trail or the Trail of Time, take in the birds and small wildlife in the park. You will wonder at how some of the rock formations of the Grand Canyon remain standing. Bring your camping equipment. You’ll need a backcountry pass to stay overnight.

Be sure to visit and climb to the top of the 70 ft Desert Tower Point, where you can take in the majesty of the park and see 100 miles in every direction on a clear day. Or, go to the Tusayan Ruin, a mere 3 miles from Desert View to engross yourself in the ancient life of an Ancestral Puebloan village.

The Grand Canyon is a gorge of the Colorado River and is often considered one of the Wonders of the World. It was formed over the last two billion years, with layer upon layer of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock formations. The park itself covers almost 2,000 square miles, with a canyon 277 river miles long.

Designated a World Heritage Site in 1979, the park celebrated its 100th anniversary in February 2019.
