Do you like spelunking? Then Carlsbad Caverns National Park is the place for you. Located in the Chihuahuan Desert of southern New Mexico, it houses more than 100 caves. It’s an underground adventure without electricity or paved walkways. If you’re fit, go in through the Natural Entrance. It’s a 1.25-mile trail and 79-story entrance to the caverns. Not your style? You can take the elevator from the visitor’s center.
The aptly named “Big Room” is a huge underground chamber in the cavern, almost 4,000 feet (1.2 km) long, 625 feet (191 m) wide, and 255 feet (78 m) high at its highest point. It is the fifth-largest such chamber in North America. Lechuguilla Cave is the second deepest in the United States at 138.3 miles. Don’t get vertigo when you peer down Slaughter Canyon! You’ll need to take a ranger-guided tour to see the other rooms, no roaming around on your own to see King's Palace, Left Hand Tunnel, Hall of the White Giant, Lower, Spider, and Slaughter Canyon caves. Wear your comfortable shoes, watch where you step, and avoid the bat guano from the former residents.
