The cathedral is a twin-towered structure where the cathedral is located. Previously this place was the palace of 30th Kabaka of Buganda, Kabaka Mutesa I Mukaabya Walugembe, who reigned from 1856 until 1884. He relocated this place after it burnt down. Later he shifted the palace to Mengo hill and started ruling from there. French Catholic missionaries (White Fathers) were looking to set up the nascent Catholic church at that time, for which the prince donated the place to them. In 1914, the missioners started the construction. The cathedral was consecrated on 31 December 1925. Twenty-two Uganda martyrs were burnt to death since they refused to give up 'white man's' religion. This cathedral is constructed as a memorial to the Catholic victims who have found their final resting place here. They are featured in the stained-glass windows which decorate the building. The remains of the first African Catholic bishop are also preserved in this place. If you get a chance to attend Sunday masses, then you will have a chance to enlighten yourself with the choir. You can also have a peaceful time with the music of the musicians. You can enjoy the outstanding views of the city from the grounds outside the church.
