This palace is situated on the top of the Mengo hills. It was the residence of Buganda King. The sprawling grounds are famous for their underground prisons. The prisoners were kept here on the instructions of dictator Idi Amin during the 1970s. Later the King also used these chambers to torture the prisoners. A short guided tour helps you understand the history and culture of Uganda kings. These prison chambers are famously known as torture chambers. Most people return with a heavy heart after listening to the stories of torture committed by Amin and his secret police. The chambers were initially built to store war weapons, later the prisoners of war were kept there. It is said that sometimes the prisoners were subjected to a high level of torture. You can see the inscribing about it in the prison cells even after all these years. One more thing is only these cells are shown to tourists, the palace is not shown from inside. Despite all this, quite a good number of tourists visit the place. You can also take a short visit to the place and learn about the kings.
It is 5.4 km from the city center. It will take just 8 minutes to reach the palace. Matau is the best way of transport. Charges are told by the driver on arriving destination. Take a boda-boda, it would cost you around 4000 UGX.
