The mosque construction began in 2004 but took 4 years to come to existence. Gaddafi paid for the completion of the mosque, that's how it got the name Gaddafi National Mosque. This is the most famous tourist spot in Kampala. Just like Eiffel Tower to Paris and Liberty statue to America, this mosque is famous in Kampala. This is a very big mosque which accommodates 35,000 people. During Ramzan and other Muslim festivals, the mosque gets visited by people double its capacity. It is beautifully designed with a mixture of cultures of Arab, and European, giving it an African Touch. People of all creeds, political affiliations, ethnic backgrounds, cultures, and nationalities are welcome here. Women are expected to fully cover their body and are also required to cover their heads with scarves. Men must wear pants and a sleeved shirt during a visit to this famous mosque. This is one of the biggest mosques in East, Central, and Sub-Saharan Africa. On reaching the place, visit the tourist center, where they give a lot of information and knowledgeable guides are also available.
It is 4 km from the city center. It hardly takes 6 minutes to reach there. Take a safe boda-boda tour. Get down at stop 2. The driver charges 2000 UGX.
