About Ko Pha-Ngans Tallest Yang Na Yai Tree

Yang Na Yai or Diptcrocarpus Alatus tree is the giant and the tallest tree. The Diptcrocarpus Alatus tree grows all over South Asia, but large trees like this are becoming rarer and rarer. It is because the wood from this tree is used in construction and furniture making. Its Resin is used for lacquering and sealing boats. The bark of this tree is also used to make traditional medicines. The giant tree is Island’s famous landmark and is about 53.3 meters tall and 400 years old. The giant tree is located near Wat Pho Temple. At the bottom of the tree, it is decorated with colourful ribbons, and flowers are tied around. This is done to indicate that the tree is lucky. There is a signboard as well that says Biggest Yang Na. According to Thai culture, anything natural and old is considered to be blessed. People believe that the tree has certain tree spirits and finds it to be sacred. The beliefs are each with their share of the story too.
Locals have a story that the spirit of long Boo visited a man who owned the land and was told not to sell it. The man listened to the mystical message by the spirit and did not sell. The area remained with the family since then and is believed that the spirit of long Boo is still protecting the place.
