About Chiang Mai Zoo

The most popular zoo in Chiang Mai was made alive in 1952 by Mr.Harold Mason Young, an American. He volunteered in Thailand to teach the soldiers about living with animals in the forest.  Initially, a private zoo was set up by him, where he was living as a tenant for teaching purposes. The house is called as Weluwan House. Later, he got permission from Thailand Government to make use of the forest in the footsteps of Doi Suthep. It was taken by the Government when it served as a great place of attraction and a study center of Chiang Mai and converted it into a tourist attraction. Now the largest zoo extending 200 acres in the forest has more than 400 different species of animals. The zoo is maintained close to nature so that the animals can feel safe as they live in their own house. The zoo's passion is to preserve animals healthily and provide its visitors excellent education about forest and wildlife.
The zoo's main attractions are Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui, the Panda ambassadors sent from China. The attractive aquarium and volary make it more interesting to walk through the pathways. The aquarium has more than 100 species of fishes. The zoo is laid down in a way that allows the visitors to interact with the animals directly, especially feeding Giraffe by walking through the ramp is a highlight. The recreation space inlaid in the back of the zoo near a small lake gives a complete feel of enjoyment to the visitors.
