The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, a part of the "Golden Triangle of Art" museums that include the Prado and the Reina Sofia national galleries, is known to host one of the most diverse collections of art in Spain. With over 1,600 paintings, it once bragged the honor of being the second-largest private collection of art worldwide. Originally a private collection in the early 1990s it was later purchased by the government of Spain.
It is one of the most-toured museums containing art from Italian artists to German, and artwork from several countries in Europe. The collection stores early European paintings, mainly trecento and quattrocento Italian paintings by Duccio, Bernardo Daddi Luca di Tommè, Paolo Uccello, and the early Flemish and Dutch painters, along with famous portraits by Domenico Ghirlandaio and Vittore Carpaccio. To experience the essence of European art and design the museum is one of the best places to go.
