This statement museum, housing more than 20,000 art pieces is by far one of the best locations in Madrid to experience contemporary and modern art. The museum named after Queen Sofia is an architectural wonder, the front-facing facade is jeweled with two glass and steel elevators and a stone slab wall.
Temporary exhibitions are held in the courtyard where three other impressive buildings reside. Covered with triangular roofs, the three structures designed by Jean Nouvel give character and complement the front of the museum. The museum's crown jewel is the exhibition of Picasso's famous artwork Guernica, which speaks of post-war Spain, and sets the tone for the rest of the museum. Always easy for the eye, the museum's vast contemporary collection is a treat for every tourist visiting Madrid.
