About Durban Botanic Gardens

Durban Botanical Garden is spread across 15 hectares and definitely worth your time! Built in 1849, it is the oldest botanical gardens and one of the most visited tourist attractions in South Africa. With tons of ferns, orchids and other rare species, the garden has many unique specimens of flora suited for its sub-tropical climate. The collection of flora here will mesmerise you. The Orchid House is one of the main attractions for international tourists and is a must visit spot on your trip to the Botanic Gardens. The calmness and serenity of the place will rejuvenate your spirit.

How to reach

Distance from city center: 11.1 km

Located in the Berea district, the gardens are less than a 10-minute drive from downtown Durban. A regular shuttle bus connects the gardens with the city center. For those arriving by car, use the large free parking lot outside the gardens’ main entrance.

Tips

  • Do carry your caps/hats so that you can roam around without getting affected by the sun.
  • Wear comfortable footwear. The garden is huge and will require a lot of walking.
  • Best time to visit in December when the gardens host the Carols by Candlelight concert series with performances by well-known bands such as the Soweto Gospel Choir. 
  • Visit from November to February to see the greatest number of trees and plants in full bloom. Reserve a guided tour before your visit.
  • Some areas of the gardens might be closed at specific timings. Checking beforehand is recommended.
