It is the main square of Ljubljana, dedicated to the greatest Slovenian poet, Dr. France Preseren. His statue stands in the middle of the square and is surrounded by the finest secession buildings from the start of the 20th century. There are three birches behind it. The building to the left is the Central Pharmacy. In the back, the Ljubljanica flows past the square. In 1991, a bronze scale model of Ljubljana was set at the upper end of the square as a gift by the city's Urban Planning Institute. Lying in front of the medieval town's entrance, the square is a funnel-shaped hub of streets that run from it into different directions. Filled with many shopping boutiques and cafes, the square has become a popular meeting spot for both locals and visitors. In fact, many musicians and performers consider this square as a venue to showcase their skill. A glance around the place shows the architectural design of the square belongs to the 19th century and it was done by an architect Maks Fabiani. However, many of the surrounding buildings have undergone a change in the recent 20th century. Hence, you see a mixture of both old and modern architectural design over here.
Lovely oval shaped Preseren Square is the centre of Ljubljana's Old Town. In December during the festive season, the square is a magical place. The square is connected by Plecnik’s Triple Bridge with the Old Town, Market and the river and is the perfect spot to start your Ljubljana sightseeing and your city exploration. Sitting on the statue stairs is a good way to meet locals, as it is a popular spot for a chit-chat where you can listen to street musicians and watch the locals stroll by.
